now when i try to connect to the setup utility it says"searching COM10 " and then the program becomes unresponsive and requires a shut down!

It can be frustrating to know exactly what combination it takes to connect on certain pages. I have learned that some pages, such as calibration or flight log export dont connect until you hit ok on the following windows. I also think that you are not supposed to connect the usb when you are calibrating until you hit the start button.
make sure you dont plug in the battery until you are connected as well, I seem to have had recurring issues if the battery is connected first. Just start the software and connect the usb then hit connect. If you run into messages that say "cant find board" just start all over, close everything down.
i can tell you that the new software/ firmware is a HUGE leap forward.
