two main motors and four control motors?

Has anybody built a hex copter that had two close in large motors with just on/off and four smaller motors that have full control. Seems like this might be a little more efficient than having controllers on all six motors.

I hasn't build one.

But I know that when i want to turn right/left, 3 or 2 of my mini quad maybe off, just 1 or 2 run to achieve it....

So, you said can make sense.

Easy? You call that easy?
There's a few designs like that. One or two main rotors in the middle providing the majority of lift with three or four control rotors around the outside. The main rotors would still need to be speed controlled, not just on/off though.
