Quads in the RC Community

I bought my first (and probably my last) copy of RCM&E magazine and in it was a letter to the editor. It was in relation to an editorial back in the March edition which I can only assume that the editor had painted quadcopters in a grey light.

The points I picked up in the readers letter was:
1. The editor did not "encompass" the use of quads thus the lack of articles in RCM&E magazine
2. Some model shop owners had the same views as the editor but are enjoying the extra sales of spares and RTF units.
3. The reader made a valid point that people who start on quads may at a later date progress to other forms of flying.

The points I picked up from the editor even though some points were noted, others left me confused, especially the following point:

"Model shops sell all sorts of things that we can't or mustn't feature, flying toys being one of them"

The editor also advised that he is proposing a quadcopter title. If this is the case, surely he needs to have an interest in them rather than just putting out a title to make money from a hobby he maintains that "multirotor flying is a completely different hobby to model flying". If he is considering bringing out a quad title, why write:

" If we ever get to the point where quadcopters become commonplace at our flying fields then, of course, our coverage will reflect it and I'll eat my words".

Is this some form of elitism and that quad flyers have no place in the RC community? Amazing how some Police forces in the Uk and abroad use these "Toys".

Which camp are you in? You will fly anything, you will only fly quads or you will only fly aeroplanes?

I get a laugh about this type of mentality. This falls back to the day when RC helicopters were becoming more popular and starting to show up at local flying fields. The "usually older" airplane guys did not approve, and did what they could to make it hard for helicopters to be a part of the hobby. One the other hand, you had people who loved their new helicopter and did whatever they needed to enjoy their hobby.

Quad-copter falls into that same category, there will always be people making if difficult for others to enjoy what the do. Quads will find there own following and make it's own path just as helicopter did. There will be large event in the near future that's only about Quad-copter. Just watch.............competitions will come, sponsorship's, event's, all sort of stuff will happen in the coming years.

It used to be only airplane stuff was mainstream, that has changed with many other vehicle to fly. I enjoy all of it! If you don't have a smile on your face when someone shows up at your flying spot with something you have never seen before, your doing it wrong. I love seeing new stuff and cannot wait to see what happens in the future.

As far as hobby shops selling stuff.............. A hobby shop is a business, if the owner is not always looking for ways to improve their business, they won't be around long. Whether they like it or not, the new products coming out, they must embrace.

Also people writing articles about this type of stuff to put into their magazines or articles. Remember it's their job to write stuff, does not mean they're correct about what they write. I used to work in the industry for one of the largest forum owners as a boss. I watch this stuff happen all the time.

The most important thing is to have fun!

Thanks,
Chris
