I bought my first (and probably my last) copy of RCM&E magazine and in it was a letter to the editor. It was in relation to an editorial back in the March edition which I can only assume that the editor had painted quadcopters in a grey light.
The points I picked up in the readers letter was:
1. The editor did not "encompass" the use of quads thus the lack of articles in RCM&E magazine
2. Some model shop owners had the same views as the editor but are enjoying the extra sales of spares and RTF units.
3. The reader made a valid point that people who start on quads may at a later date progress to other forms of flying.
The points I picked up from the editor even though some points were noted, others left me confused, especially the following point:
"Model shops sell all sorts of things that we can't or mustn't feature, flying toys being one of them"
The editor also advised that he is proposing a quadcopter title. If this is the case, surely he needs to have an interest in them rather than just putting out a title to make money from a hobby he maintains that "multirotor flying is a completely different hobby to model flying". If he is considering bringing out a quad title, why write:
" If we ever get to the point where quadcopters become commonplace at our flying fields then, of course, our coverage will reflect it and I'll eat my words".
Is this some form of elitism and that quad flyers have no place in the RC community? Amazing how some Police forces in the Uk and abroad use these "Toys".
Which camp are you in? You will fly anything, you will only fly quads or you will only fly aeroplanes?
