How would you control a Duo-Hexacopter?

I was looking at Digital Filmaker magazine tonight (UK) and they had a spread on BeyondHD
http://www.beyondhdaerial.tv/the-drone/

It featured a Duo Hexacopter (12 motors)
On it was a DJI gps puck, so how exactly would that work, is it possible to have 2 controllers looking after 12 motors at the same time, one for top and one for bottom or is it something different?
Any thoughts/ideas on this?

its just a hex layout on 1 FC. So 2 motors on 1 arm are getting the same signal. But 1 of the 2 motors is reversed similar to a conventional coaxial setup. There is no controller that has 12 motor outputs that I know of.

Works like this:

Every controller that can do a hex /Y6 can do an X12 (basically you combine 2 motors of same rotation of neighboring arms)

The picture is for DJI Yrev6

I always wonder why more folks not do this configuration most of the COAX configurations are 4 arms
What are the main advantages other than the obvious more motors more power
What are the big desadvantages of a COAX with 6 arms
