I wanna fly!!

I am brand spanking new to this multirotor stuff and it's been a confusing few months trying to research all the possibilities. I have looked at everything from high end $25,000 systems to scratch and dent stuff. Trying to figure out what will work for what I want to do is pretty tough. I am retired and would like to do photography for myself at first but then maybe more commercially later. I have read all about the FAA and weather or not you can or can't fly and I have satisfied my concerns about that.

Anyway, I am hoping that these forums will help me determine which set up I will end up buying. I have two trains of thought. Go low end to start, or, pay the money and do it right. I realize there are risks to both ways of doing this. I know I want FPV and gps with some sort of screen to see the camera view.

It will be interesting to see where it all ends up. The wife thinks I'm crazy ( I'm sure some of you have heard that ) and she might be right. I have not figured out the best bullcrap rational to tell her about why this is a good idea so any excuses used by any of you would be greatly appreciated. I've used up most of my bag-o-tricks when I bought the full dress Harley several years ago. She actually likes that now since I took her on numerous rides to other states. Maybe she will end up liking this new idea too but right now I just get the whole rolling eyes, turn around, and frozen pizza for supper thing. I will probably end up having to buy her new clothes or something but that's ok.

By the way, I think it's perfectly fine to be 53 years old and wanting to still feel like a kid by doing something like this. I'm right about that.........aren't I??

Dave you are completely right about that! Welcome to the forum - there is a wealth of knowledge here and everyone if more than eager to help out. Personally - I dont think you can go wrong with a DJI 450/550 setup to start. AND get yourself a Futuba 8fgs. Good stuff and it will be a long time before you ever out grow that radio. I had great luck with my first 550, completely stock except for the props. I can not tell you how many times i have bounced it off something and she still gets flown today. It has been upgraded several times and she keeps on giving. Nice part about those DJI birds - pretty cheap and easy to fix stuff. The NAZA with GPS is a great, easy flight controller to learn on too. One other thing to consider - is you could eventually take the stuff from your DJI bird and put it on a FPV purpose rig like a TBS disco. Personally I would stay away form the Phantom, radio makes me nervous - spend a bit more and get a way better setup, especially the radio. Keep us in the loop and dont be afraid to throw your thoughts out here and see if they make sense. I ask dumb questions all the time :) BTW what part of the world are you in? might be someone close to you that would meet up with you in person.

Well Dave you just about copied my newbie speech! LOL I am new to multirotors, my wife thinks I am crazy "you want one of those illegal drones they talk about!" stuff and
I also have a 09 Road Glide, had many bikes but first HD. I am retired Law Enforcement. I am still looking for the right multirotor, but looking at the DJI 450 with GPS set up and
I already have a DX8 radio. I also have a EXI 450 helicopter I am trying to sell or trade for my DJI 450. Helicopters for me are just too hard and just about cut my leg off, but that
is another story!:upset: Well the journey begins, let us see where it goes! Rotor on...........

A couple of you wrote that you're retired already. Good. I can't as yet even though I'm older. Who other flyers are retired? I live in Morgan Hill California.

I finally settled on a nice package deal for an xaircraft fpv set up. I figure since its pretty basic, I can't screw it up too bad. If I destroy it, it won't cost me an arm and a leg. It will be fun to hear how all of us new guys make out. I'm sure there will be some good stories. If anyone lives close to York Pa, please get hold of me! I sure could use some pointers.
