Need advice to get started

Hello I want to start to build a multicopter. I had looked at buying the mikrokopter octo xl kit. But then read that the droidworks airframe is very good with the mikrokopter flight control. I am wanting to use the multicopter for aireal photography using a g11 canon. Then possibly my 30d DSLR. I am wondering if this is the right way to go. Or should I look at other options. Also if I go with the droidworx frame what all mikrokopter components do I need. Thanks for any help.

I have not flown anything yet except for the very cheap heli from stores. I plan on purchasing a simulator once I figure out what receiver to purchase. And practice with that as I build the Multicopter

The best way would be reading and reading. I spent about 2 months with reading before purchasing.

Things you should learn / read:

* Different flight controllers (Mikrokopter, HoverFly, OpenPilot, DJI Wookong-M etc.). For AP, generally Mikrokopter is used.
* Multirotor setups. Octo, Hexa, Quad, X8, Y6, Tri. Search over the forums about these motor alignment and their advantage / disadvantage. Maybe you won't need an Octo. Bigger doesn't mean better always.
* Piloting skills.
* Radio / FPV setups.

I started using Mikrokopter, so first thing is to learn how to setup it. It's a software so playing with it effects the flight characteristics.

Search for horror stories: Blow outs, flip of death, broken props, redundancy, capacitors on the loose, malfunctioning pressure sensors and gyros etc.

Simulators are ok but theres nowt like the real thing.. Before you put up a multi thousand dollar machine with hours of work and love put in to it I would suggest a Gaui 330x to get into the flying of them http://www.quadcopters.co.uk/?PageI...ui 330X-S Quadflyer, Quadcopter, Quadrocopter

I find my little Blade mCX2 great for indoor practice.. tough as old boots.. and gets you into hoveing and nose in flying with out breaking the bank http://www.bladehelis.com/Products/Default.aspx?ProdId=EFLH2400

Thanks I think the Gaui 330x is the way I'll start. I have read it can carry a camera if I want to so it will be good to get started with and hone my skills. I have been trying to find out what the best radio would be to purchase. I have had trouble finding out which to go with. Any preferences ? Thanks for all the advice.
